MARECK MALAC
Marek Malac is a Senior Research Officer with Canada’s Nanotechnology Research Centre of the National Research Council (NRC-NANO). He is also an adjunct professor at the Department Physics at the University of Alberta. From 2019 to 2021 Malac served as the president of the Microscopy Society of Canada and co-organized joint meetings of the Japanese Society of Microscopy and Microscopy Society of Canada.
Malac's research focuses on exploring the physical principles underlying electron microscopy (EM), and developing instrumentation and data interpretation methods. Malac co-developed a new phase plate imaging method, known as the hole-free phase plate. He has been working on experimental methods for quantitative measurement of optical dispersion relations at nanoscale using momentum-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). To assist training of future microscopists, and to facilitate electron microscopy development, he initiated a project towards an open source electron microscopy hardware platform, referred to as NanoMi (nanomi.org).
