Prof. Jian-Ren Shen is currently a professor and director of the Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Science, Okayama University, Japan. He has solved the crystal structure of photosystem II at an atomic resolution in 2011, and further used X-ray free electron lasers to analyze various intermediate structures of water-oxidation, which revealed the mechanism of water-oxidation. Recently, he and his group are employing cryo-electron microscopy to study various structures of photosystem I and photosystem II in complex with their light-harvesting antenna proteins, in order to reveal the light-energy harvesting and transfer mechanisms in photosynthesis.
